RON HARRIS, 68 TO BE INDUCTED INTO HALL OF FAME!

My recollection is that Ron was an all conference linebacker for the
McClellan Lions. Because he is my cousin, I also know that he played football for SAU and coached basketball at Waldo and Emerson before going into school administration as principal and, eventually superintendent.

Although I now understand that he was notified in December, I just heard yesterday on the radio that he has been selected as one of the 2007 inductees into the Arkansas High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame. The induction banquet is to be held on July 13.

Also, because Ron is my cousin, I know that he is
suffering from Lou Gehrig's disease. As you know, Lou Gehrig's
disease is alway fatal, the only question is how long and what path through the body that the muscle deterioration will take. Ron's loss of strength started in his hands and is currently working its way through his arms. Ron's three girls and his wife have been very supportive and Ron has maintained an exemplary attitude. To me the most heartbreaking aspect of this is that he won't be able to watch his grandkids grow up.

The reason for this message is, first, to inform all of those who knew or know Ron of both this recent honor
and his health difficulties and, second to encourage you to contact Ron to congratulate him on his selection to the Hall of Fame.

Although I have his email address, I have not asked his permission to give it out. I can give you his snail mail address which is 13 Regency Circle in Magnolia. The zip code is 71753.

If you wish to email him, send it to me at dwill12@entergy.com and I will forward it to Ron. It would be a real encouragement to him to be flooded with congratulations.

At the time of his unexpected death, Rich and his wife Colleen were resident volunteers at the refuge, a site that Rich especially enjoyed in all his travels. Rich was born Dec. 2, 1943, in Topeka, Kan., and was raised near Little Rock, Ark.  Craig lost his battle with cancer around 3:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon (1/12/07).  Below is the funeral information.

northlittlerockfuneralhome.com

Visitation:  1/16/07  6-8pm  NLR Funeral Home, Main St, NLR

Service:  1/17/07   1pm  St Luke's Episcopal, JFK, NLR with entombment at St Luke's

Even though I don't know many of you on this distribution, I can't begin to adequately express my appreciation for the love, prayers, and support you have shown Craig and his family.  I’ve had the privilege of being Craig’s manager at work for the last seven years and I was with Craig a few hours before he passed away.  I wanted to share with you my thoughts of that day.  I hope it brings comfort to you as you recall all the special times with Craig.  -          Darrell Cheatham

It’s a little past noon and the phone rings.  Not unusual – Craig had already received several calls during the time I was there for a visit at the hospital.  This one was different.  It was a wrong number.   The caller was inquiring about her friend, the previous occupant of the room.  Without hesitation Craig introduced himself, explained that he didn’t know her friend, but began to ask about the person, comforting the caller.  Anyone else would have simply said “You have the wrong number” and would have quickly hung up.  Not Craig – his whole life was about connecting with people.

My running joke with Craig was that I was never able to have lunch with him without someone recognizing him and starting an enthusiastic conversation.  One lunch, I thought I had him.  We are almost back to my car when someone from across a long parking lot yelled, “Hey Craig – remember me from high school.”  Craig had won again.

Craig loved people.  He would experience an almost childlike frustration when someone responded to one of his trademark greetings coldly.  Why wouldn’t someone want to start a conversation?  He genuinely enjoyed finding the commonality in a person – seeing differences not as an obstacle, but as an opportunity to break down a barrier.

As much as Craig loved people, he loved his family even more.  Despite the frequent late night battles with Mary’s Parkinson’s, he would arrive at work ready to give 110 percent.  He considered it to be his exclusive privilege to hold Mary during the night when the tremors came.   I have countless memories of Craig, with a father’s pride, retelling stories of his kids.  His family was his crown jewel of this life.

It’s now almost 12:30 and Craig’s lunch has arrived – Salisbury steak, not his favorite.  With a chagrined look, Craig knows he needs to eat - physical therapy is just moments away.  As we say our goodbyes, his mom instinctively begins to cut up his food.  Craig’s limited mobility made even the simplest tasks a challenge.   The love between a mom and her always “little boy” would be the last visual image I would have of Craig as I left the hospital.  Two and a half hours later, Craig would be gone.

Craig is now completely healed, freed by the One he had yielded to years ago – the person of Jesus Christ.  Craig’s life while on earth was just his title page – the first chapter of his life is just now beginning to be written.  That is the hope that is available to all.

In the end, you can only truly measure someone by the legacy they leave behind.  Craig’s heritage will be the lesson that even during incredibility difficult times, God is always sovereign, people matter, and having a family is never a burden - it is an amazing privilege.   .
